Seascape (Foot), 1968
A key figure of American Pop, Tom Wesselmann distilled everyday motifs and fragments of the female body into bold, emblematic images. Seascape (Foot) is part of Wesselmann´s 1960s Seascapes, in which beach culture is rendered through cropped silhouettes, saturated color, and sharply defined contours. Isolating a single body part against an expanse of sky and surf, Wesselmann transforms the scene into a witty, sensual icon—at once immediate and graphically precise. The print carries forward themes central to the artist’s practice since the Great American Nude: the play between desire and display, between high art and commercial imagery. Published for Documenta 4 in 1968, this work has since become a classic, representing American Pop Art at its peak.
