Allen Jones

(British, b. 1937)

Allen Jones stands as one of the foremost British Pop artists, whose provocative exploration of the human figure has resonated across six decades. Born in Southampton, he studied at Hornsey College of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he became part of the first wave of British Pop alongside David Hockney and R. B. Kitaj.

Emerging in the early 1960s, Jones quickly gained notoriety for his bold, sensuously charged sculptures—most famously the Chair, Table, and Hatstand (1969)—that controversially fused women with furniture with fetishistic overtones. Though these works sparked debates on objectification and agency, they remain emblematic of Pop Art’s interrogation of desire, function, and spectacle.

Beyond scandal, Jones has sustained a prolific practice in painting, printmaking, and drawing, continuing to explore eroticism, movement, and theatricality across media Retrospectives—most notably at the Royal Academy in 2014—and inclusion in major collections such as Tate, MoMA, and the British Museum underscore his enduring influence.
