(South Korean, b. 1977)

SEO is a contemporary artist whose practice bridges the cultural traditions of her native South Korea with the visual language of European modernism. Born in Gwangju in 1977, she studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin under Georg Baselitz, who became an important mentor. Since then, SEO has developed a highly distinctive technique that integrates painting with intricately cut and collaged paper elements, producing surfaces of striking density and luminosity.

Her works often reference art-historical motifs—from Renaissance perspective to Impressionist color and Expressionist intensity—while simultaneously engaging with contemporary themes of identity, memory, and global exchange. Through the layering of thousands of paper fragments, SEO creates images that oscillate between figuration and abstraction, surface and depth, presence and dissolution.

Exhibited internationally, including in Europe, Asia, and the United States, SEO’s works are represented in both private and institutional collections.
